🌊
Vagus Nerve Reset
2-5 min • High impact
⌄

Your vagus nerve is your body’s built-in calm switch. These techniques activate it directly and quickly.

  • 1
Cold water splash: Rinse your face with cold water or hold ice on your wrists for 30 seconds. This triggers your dive reflex and slows your heart rate fast.
  • 2
Hum or sing: Gently hum any note for 30 to 60 seconds. The vibration through your throat directly stimulates the vagus nerve.
  • 3
Exhale longer than you inhale: Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 8. Repeat 5 times. A long exhale activates the parasympathetic branch.
  • 4
Gargle with water: Gargle vigorously for 30 seconds. This engages the same throat muscles connected to vagal tone.
🍃
5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
3 min • Anxiety and panic
⌄

When your mind is spiraling, this brings you back into your body using your senses as an anchor.

Bonus: Step outside barefoot if you can. Skin-to-earth contact has measurable cortisol-lowering effects.

🧘
Yoga for Calm
5-10 min • Body and mind release
⌄

These poses are chosen specifically to down-regulate the nervous system. Move slowly. There is no rush here.

  • 1
Child’s Pose (Balasana): Kneel, fold forward, arms long or at your sides. Stay 1 to 3 minutes. Forehead-to-floor contact calms the frontal lobe.
  • 2
Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani): Lie on your back, scoot close to a wall, rest legs up. Stay 5 to 10 minutes. Shifts blood flow and signals safety to the nervous system.
  • 3
Seated Forward Fold: Sit with legs extended, fold gently forward. Hold 1 to 2 minutes. Stimulates the vagus nerve through gentle compression of the belly.
  • 4
Supine Twist: Lie on your back, bring one knee to your chest and let it cross to the opposite side. Breathe slowly. Hold 1 minute each side.
✨
Body Scan Meditation
5-10 min • Tension and stress
⌄

Use this when you feel tightly wound, disconnected, or numb. It works by returning gentle, nonjudgmental attention to your body.

  • 1
Lie down or sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths and let your body settle into whatever surface is holding you.
  • 2
Start at the top of your head. Notice any sensation. Warmth, pressure, tingling, tightness. You don’t need to change anything.
  • 3
Move slowly downward: forehead, jaw, neck, shoulders, chest, belly, arms, hands, lower back, hips, thighs, knees, calves, feet.
  • 4
Wherever you find tension, breathe into it. Imagine each exhale releasing just a little of what you’re holding.
  • 5
Finish with three slow breaths. Place both hands on your heart. Say quietly: “I am safe right now.”
🚶
Somatic Shake Release
3-5 min • Overwhelm and freeze
⌄

Animals instinctively shake after a threat to discharge stress hormones from the body. We lost this instinct. Here is how to bring it back.

  • 1
Stand with feet hip-width apart. Soften your knees slightly. Feel both feet grounded on the floor.
  • 2
Begin gently bouncing at the knees, letting your body be loose and heavy. Let your arms hang and wobble freely.
  • 3
Let the shaking move up through your hips, belly, shoulders, and head. Let go of controlling how it looks. This is supposed to be a little silly.
  • 4
Continue for 2 to 3 minutes. Then stand still. Breathe. Notice the shift. You may feel lighter, warmer, or more present in your body.
❄
Cold Water Protocol
1-2 min • Panic, fast reset
⌄

Cold exposure triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which lowers heart rate rapidly and shifts your nervous system toward calm. It is one of the fastest physiological resets available to you.

  • 1
Face submersion: Fill a bowl or sink with cold water. Hold your face under for 15 to 30 seconds. This is the fastest option.
  • 2
Cold splash: Splash cold water on your face and the back of your neck 10 times in a row. Shake the water off gently.
  • 3
Wrist cooling: Run cold water over the inside of both wrists for 1 to 2 minutes. A major pulse point that quickly cools circulating blood.
  • 4
After any of these, breathe slowly and notice your heartbeat. You should feel it begin to slow within 30 to 60 seconds.
Something to hold onto
“My body is not broken. There is a reason I feel this way. And there is a way back to balance.”
A gentle reminder from Kristin: These tools are here to support your nervous system in the moment. They are not a replacement for the deeper healing work we are doing together. If you are consistently reaching for this kit, that is important information. Let’s talk about it at your next session so we can address what is underneath.
